An activist group is painting over street signs in Cork at the moment in an effort to remove the names of British monarchs from the city.
Member of the group Diarmaid Ó Cadhla believes that Irish streets should be named after Irish heroes rather than “aristocrats and criminals” from Britain’s history, according to Eveningecho.ie.
The group is reacting the recent unveiling of the city’s Victorian Quarter, named after the Victorian buildings located in the area.

Ó Cadhla contacted the mayor’s office about his group’s grievances before they painted the street signs but said he was “snubbed”. Here’s what the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Des Cahill, had to say,
“We responded to both letters that we received explaining that the process of naming roads comes under the roads directorate, not the Lord Mayor’s office. It is a long and complicated procedure and there is no value in me meeting with him because I can’t tell him anything different to the roads department”.
