Derry café offers free meals for kids amid cost-of-living crisis

Katy Thornton

Our faith in humanity has officially been restored.

Rare does a day go by where the phrase “cost-of-living crisis” isn’t heard. Used with the same frequency as the housing crisis at this stage, everything, and we mean everything, has astronomically increased in price (I don’t even have the strength to talk specifics, nor do I really need to).

In the face of such a crisis, Nine Hostages Coffee Company have opted to do something that is nothing short of heroic. From Friday 2nd September, the Derry café are offering free meals to school kids, to ease the burden on those feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis.

They took to social media to share their noble pursuit. In their Instagram caption, Nine Hostages Coffee Co said this:

We can’t believe how much everything has increased in price recently. All us in hospitality have had to put prices up on everything to try to meet the astronomical prices of produce and pay wages and bills.

It’s not fair. Especially on the kids. We are doing free kids meals from Friday 2nd of September. If you need somewhere to go after school for a bitta peace then you’re so welcome up here. we will ask what you’d like from the free menu. There is zero judgement.”

The Derry café hopes this can be of help to someone who “is finding things tough” or has no one at home when they get home from school. Essentially they hope to provide a bit of grub and a safe space for kids in need.

Nine Hostages Coffee Co assure customers that this will be offered all day every day. They will have meals suited to all dietary requirements, encouraging those with allergies to make them aware of them.
