Organisers have updated festivalgoers on the status of this summer’s plans – and it’s not good news.

A highlight on Galway’s summer calendar of events, people flock to the City of Tribes for the Galway International Arts Festival each year. However, with the country on lockdown the past few weeks, plans for this summer’s festival had been put on hold while organisers awaited an update from the government… and though they’d love to come back with more positive news, organisers have confirmed that GIAF 2020 will not go ahead as planned.

Making the announcement on Instagram, festival organisers wrote:

“Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, it is with regret that we have to announce that the July 2020 FEstival will not go ahead as planned.

While we know this is very disappointing for our audiences, GIAF is happy to announce that it is planning a special programme of events to take place this Autumn with details to be released in early summer.”

Festivalgoers are advised that all Heineken Big Top concerts are being rescheduled to July 2021 and original tickets will remain valid.

Commenting on the change to the festival’s summer schedule of events, CEO John Crumlish and Artistic Director Paul Fahy had this to say:

“We are very disappointed to announce the postponement of the Festival this July. This decision was made with a very heavy heart but GIAF has no other option under these unprecedented circumstances.

We are now working to bring audiences a programme of events this Autumn and will announce details very soon. Our work has always been about bringing people together, artists and audiences, to celebrate great art, and we hope it won’t be too long before we are all back together to do so again.”
