Concerns have been raised about the future of the Galway Leisureland centre out in Salthill after staff were yesterday informed that both the swimming and gym facilities would be closed to the public in coming weeks.
Overlooking Galway Bay, Leisureland is one of Salthill’s longest-standing sports and recreation centres. Situated along the famous Salthill Prom, the leisure centre been around for close to 47 years, however, recent circumstances have raised concerns that the future of the centre may be in question.
Forced to limit visitor numbers in line with public health guidelines on indoor gatherings, the centre has been unable to generate enough income to cover running costs in recent weeks – despite noting an influx of domestic tourists to the area.
According to reports, staff were yesterday informed that both the swimming pool and gym facilities will close in recent weeks with the operating company also confirming that a €300k council subsidy – provided for the running of the facility this year – has now been used up. An additional funding proposal has been lodged however this is unlikely to be approved given that local council is not in a position to provide further monetary support at this time.
Board officials have agreed to a proposal to operate the leisure centre on a ‘significantly reduced basis’ that would involve no pool or gym operations should additional funding be provided.
