Jack Charlton’s favourite Mayo town pays artistic tribute to the late Ireland manager

James Fenton

The Jack Charlton tributes continue to pour in over a week after his death and a new one popped up in Ballina over the weekend.

Former Ireland manager Jack Charlton had a special affinity with the Co. Mayo town, which became one of his favourite fishing spots over the years.

Residents of Ballina have now paid tribute by displaying a mural depicting the keen fisherman enjoying a pint  – another of his big passions in life. There are also plans for locals to gather at the spot on Tuesday at 12.30pm to coincide with Jack’s funeral in Northumberland.

Local Councillor Mark Duffy shared an image of the lovely piece on Sunday evening…

The mural was painted by Padhraic Mitchell with many other members of the Ballina community chipping in to help out. A fitting gesture for a man who knew all about bringing communities together and fans across the country will be able to pay their own respects tomorrow. There are plans for radio stations across Ireland to play Put ‘Em Under Pressure at 12.30pm while people are also planning to gather at Dublin’s Walkinstown Roundabout, the scene of some famous celebrations during Jack’s tenure.

We’re sure Big Jack would be raising a glass to all that.
