Alfie’s Barber Shop has announced that it will not reopen once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted at the end of this month.
There were many happy heads around the country last Friday when it was revealed that barbershops and hairdressers would be allowed to reopen to the public at the end of this month – three weeks earlier than planned. Probably one of the most-missed industries by Irish people (save for pubs and restaurants), barbers/hairdressers will have their work cut out for them at the end of the month as they try to fix some fairly dodgy at-home hairdos.
However, while many are celebrating the news by rushing to make appointments with their favourite salons, locals in Sligo have been faced with the news that one popular barbershop will not be reopening come June 29th.
In business for nearly 50 years, Alfie’s is a well-known fixture in the town and has years of experience tending to locals’ mops. Making the sad announcement that they will not be reopening at the end of the month, owners Alfie and Mary confirmed the news on Facebook writing:
“We wish to advise our customers and friends that we are not reopening. After nearly 50 years in Thomas Street, we have taken the decision to close.
Thank you sincerely for your custom over the years. Keep safe and well.”

Customers and friends have all commiserated with the owners, expressing their grief at the news and thanking them for years of hard work. Crediting them with always providing service with a smile, it’s clear that Alfie’s was more than just a barbershop and will be missed greatly by locals.
