Snorkelling Around This Old Monastery In Sligo Should Be On Every Irish Bucket List

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

This is up there as one of the coolest Irish bucket list activities.

Did you know that there is an old monastery in Co. Sligo that is like something out of a movie?

The remote Inishmurray Island is four miles from the coast of Sligo and rivals the likes of Tory and Skellig Michael for its state of preservation as an early Christian site, wild scenery and wildlife.

St Molaise founded the Christian Monastery in the 6th century and the remains are remarkably intact to this day.

The shape of the site is still intact, as are some of the buildings, and nearby is one of the most breathtaking islands. Picture secret alcoves, secret beaches and glistening waters.

This is a must for the adventurous spirit.

You can kayak around the island, going through caves and discovering hidden beaches as well as walking through the old beehive huts that have been left behind.

Definitely one of Ireland’s hidden gems!
