Sweet suffering Jehovah – A Derry hotel has launched a new Derry Girls experience

Sarah Finnan

Stall the ball – the Hastings Everglades Hotel has launched a brand new Derry Girls inspired experience.

Fans of the hit series Derry Girls can now unleash their inner Michelle thanks to the launch of a new tour package experience at the Hastings Everglades Hotel.

Fancy walking in the footsteps of Erin, Michelle or the wee English fella? Course ya do.

The new tour lets visitors do just that, showing them some of the key locations from the series including Guildhall and Dennis’ Wee Shop.

The hotel has also crafted a specially curated Derry Girls Afternoon Tea with a menu inspired by the show – featuring a cream horn, a cone of chips, the famous Derry sausage roll baps, a good old reliable Tayto cheese and onion crisp sandwich and even a cocktail too for good measure.

Not to mention, a Michelle rubber duck lookalike.

Known for their rubber ducks, the hotel lobby features a large fibreglass artwork duck – complete with curly brown hair and hooped earrings. And you get to bring a small one home with you as a memento.

According to Julie Hastings, Marketing Director of Hastings Hotels:

“The duck has been central to Hastings Hotels for almost 30 years and are given to guests when they stay at any of Hastings Group’s seven hotels”.

In fact, the ducks have proven to be so popular that one group of guests managed to smuggle a large three-foot version from the Everglades hotel onto a flight to Gatwick. I reckon even the Derry Girls themselves would be impressed by that one.

The package includes a Walled City Walking Tour around the city’s walls and the Bogside with loads of different photo ops along the way. A guide will show visitors around the city, telling them about the local history.

A bit more in-depth than “they ran out of spuds, everyone was raging”.

What well-known locations can you expect to visit?

You’ll be taken to the Free Derry Corner, Dennis’ Wee Shop as mentioned before, Pump Street, and even the Long Tower Church where the miracle of Our Lady Occured… followed by a trip to Bishop’s Gate where Toto reappeared.

And of course, no trip to Derry would be complete without a visit to the iconic Derry Girls Mural, pictured below.
