Where to get unbelievable Moroccan food in Galway

Sarah Finnan

Finding good Moroccan food outside of Morocco can be quite challenging, to say the least. Some might say it’s a fairly niche market. High Street Café in Galway seems to have it more than covered though.

While I originally swore off tagine (after eating it almost every single day on a ten-day trip to Morocco), I think I may have jumped the gun slightly.

High Street Café, on High Street, is a rather recent discovery of mine; I’m sad to say I went almost a whole four years before stepping inside. Tragic.

Luckily, I’ve been back countless times since…to make up for lost time. It was one of my lunchtime stomping grounds and the food delivered on taste every time.

As the name suggests High Street Café is quite literally up high. Offering bird’s eye views of Galway’s famous cobblestones below, try to the nab the window seat if you can. Perfect for watching passers-by in between courses.

Specialising in Moroccan cuisine, they also do Mediterranean, Indian, pizza and other such classics. A great shout for veggies as there are loads of different options to keep the herbivores happy. Yay vegetables!

Don’t let the word ‘café’ in the name fool you, portion sizes are big. Very big. And I’m a fan. I’d recommend the seafood chowder or the falafel plate but opt for the starter size as, believe me when I say, it’s more than enough to fill you. Definitely try the tagine too…it’s Moroccan food at its finest after all. Ideal for when the late-night munchies hit, it’s open until 11 p.m. Important to note that alcohol isn’t served but it’s BYOB and you can tip down to the Bunch of Grapes below for a bottle of wine should you feel so inclined.

With quality to match quantity, I really can’t fault this place.
