A documentary about the Peru Two will air next month

Fiona Frawley

We all remember the images and extensive coverage from 2013 of Michaella McCollum and Melissa Reid – now infamously known as the Peru Two – being arrested in Lima after attempting to smuggle over €1 million worth of cocaine out of Peru.

8 years on BBC have announced their new 5 part series High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule which will focus primarily on McCollum and her retelling of the story.

in 2013 McCollum, who is originally from Dungannon in Northern Ireland, was 19 years old and working in Ibiza before travelling to Lima ahead of the arrest. It’s understood that the two young women were paid £4,000 to smuggle the 11kg of cocaine out of Peru.

Reid and McCollum were both sentenced to 6 years and 8 months in prison, but were released in 2016 after applying to return to the UK. McCollum detailed her experience in her book, You’ll Never See Daylight Again. The synopsis of the documentary on the BBC website reads:

“Told in her own words, McCollum recounts the extraordinary story of how she became infamous worldwide as one half of the Peru Two”.

“From how she was recruited as a cartel drugs mule and came to be arrested, tried and jailed in one of the most notorious maximum security prisons in Peru, to the even more extraordinary story of how she got herself out again.”

The documentary will air on BBC on Monday 5th July.
