DIY SOS

Viewers across Ireland have been moved by the “gorgeous show”, with some even going so far as to say that DIY SOS is “the best programme on TV by a mile”.

Popular home renovation show DIY SOS has wrapped up for another season with the final episode airing on Irish tellies over the weekend. Headed up by presenter Baz Ashmawy, this week’s ep was another tearjerker and saw Baz and his team of volunteers head to Leixlip in Co Kildare where they met with the Guihen family.

Born with a rare genetic disorder, identical twins Finn and Shay have faced several challenges over the years – including extended hospital stays, surgery and round the clock care. Going out on a high, the programme hit viewers right in the feels and there were more than a few tearstained faces around the country as the show came to a close.

As upset that the series has ended as the rest of us are, Baz later shared his own heartfelt message of thanks on Instagram, writing:

“I want to get down on my knees and thank every single volunteer that came forward. There’s been hundreds upon hundreds of you. I’ve just never seen anything like it. To witness the good in people and see the kindness you dished out for nothing and always with a smile. I just had the best craic with you all.

The sacrifice you gave, away from your lives and your families, just to help neighbours or strangers who needed it. To do the right thing when it would have been so easy just not to feckn bother. I swear, it’s changed how I see our little country. It really has.

The empathy you had to come forward and make the difference. And the pride you all took in your work. Listen, You changed those families lives for ever. I don’t just mean in what you built or created but in the kindness you showed them. I’ve always believed in show! don’t tell! And you showed everything. You showed the families, but most of all you showed the whole country. It was just an amazing thing to witness.”

Describing it as a privilege to be a part of, Baz said that the experience has made him “so proud to be Irish”.

Telling the Sunday World that he would sign up for another series “in a heartbeat”, here’s hoping that there is more DIY SOS on the cards for next year.
