Conversations With Friends

Following on from the phenomenal success of the screen adaptation of Normal People, Sally Rooney’s first novel – Conversations With Friends – will also be adapted into a TV series.

The casting for the upcoming TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Conversations With Friends has just been announced and to say we’re excited would be an understatement.

Telling the tale of college students, Frances and Bobbi, the novel follows the lives of the two up and coming poets living in Dublin. Befriending Melissa and her husband Nick, the duo find themselves within “a world of beautiful houses, raucous dinner parties and holidays in Brittany”.

Newcomer Alison Oliver has been named for the lead role of Frances. An up and coming talent from the Lir Academy (whose past pupils include Mr Paul Mescal himself), Alison will star alongside Sasha Lane (American Honey, The Miseducation of Cameron Post) as Bobbi.

Meanwhile, actor Joe Alwyn will step up to the plate as Nick with Jemima Kirk (Sex Education, Girls) as his wife Melissa.

Not a prequel to Normal People, Conversations With Friends does explore similar themes to that of Normal People though – those being the need for love, affection and friendship and how those needs manifest themselves in life.

Lenny Abrahamson will once again direct the 12-part-series, working alongside writers Mark O’Halloran, Meadhbh McHugh and Susan Soon He Stanton. Coming to BBC Three and Hulu, the series is due to begin filming in Dublin, Belfast and other international locations yet to be confirmed later this year.

Speaking of his excitement to be involved in yet another Sally Rooney adaptation, Lenny Abrahamson commented:

“I feel so excited to be collaborating with four such superb actors to bring Sally’s brilliant novel to the screen. Over the last few months, it has been a privilege to work alongside Element Pictures and our extraordinary team of writers to get the scripts to a point where we all feel so excited to start shooting.

“I’ll be joined by a world-class crew (many of whom worked on Normal People) and supporting cast,”

No specific premiere date has been announced as of yet, however, Conversations With Friends is expected to air on the BBC, Hulu and RTÉ sometime next year.
