President Michael D. Higgins put on a bit of a do yesterday as himself and his wife Sabina welcomed Ireland’s 2018 Grand Slam-winning squad to the Áras.
Led by head coach Joe Schmidt and captain Rory Best, the country’s finest rugby stars got suited and booted to meet the head of state, a privilege few will ever have the honour of enjoying.
Johnny Sexton, Peter O’Mahoney et al were among those who went along with their partners in tow and plenty have been showing off their snaps with Mikey D on social media. It looked like great craic all round but it’s scrum half Conor Murray who wins the ‘wittiest comment of the day’ award.
Posing alongside the President as well as teammates Keith Earls and Rob Kearney, Murray took a cheeky swipe at the diminutive statures of both Higgins and Earls with the caption ‘Big day for @keith.earls, tallest he’s felt in years!’
The comment seems to have been received well with Earls hitting back with ‘Slagging our president seen it all now.. sorry about him Mr president!!’
It wasn’t even the best photo of the day with this snap of 6 foot 8 inch Devin Toner alongside Higgins surely taking home that prize.

We await a sick burn from President Higgins in response to Murray’s gag.
