Dublin Airport apologises to Tom Jones after poor attempt at ‘dad joke’

James Fenton

Dublin Airport has issued an apology to Welsh singer Tom Jones after making a cringey ‘dad joke’ referencing one of his songs.

The above is a sentence that would be unlikely to fit in any century before the 21st but here we are. Oh, you need an explanation? Okay then. During what must be a very quiet period for the Dublin Airport social media people, they shared images of their airfield team keeping the grass around the airport in check. Stating that ‘grass length has to be kept to 6-8 inches to deter birds, as they can be a major danger to aircraft,’ it was a nice little titbit that many people wouldn’t have been aware of.

Twitter being Twitter, somebody questioned why an airport needs grass at all, to which the reply reads: ‘If we got rid of the grass, then everyone who lives here wouldn’t see the green green grass of home when their flight lands. (Sorry that’s so bad, it’s in dad joke territory.)’

After a few moments of self-reflection, the airport then came back with ‘Actually, in hindsight that gag was so bad we should almost have apologised to @RealSirTomJones. So here’s a nice version of him singing it to make it up to you all.’

We’ve all been there after posting a gag online and the realisation slowly creeps in that it wasn’t really worth it. They more than made up for it though and it’s no surprise since the Dublin Airport social media team have form for having a bit of craic.

For what it’s worth, they did eventually reveal the real answer to the original grass query, saying ‘The real answer is paving it would be far more expensive, it would generate huge water run-off issues, and also make it harder to navigate the airfield for pilots.’

Who knew? S’pose it’s not unusual to have grass around an airport then. Yeah, we’re also sorry…
