Here’s the audio of the Liveline furore about the sex scenes in Normal People

James Fenton

Liveline was lit yesterday afternoon as numerous callers rang in to express their displeasure at the sex scenes in RTE’s new drama Normal People.

The show stars Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones as Connell and Marianne, two teenagers who fall in love and engage in plenty of physical expression of said love. Yesterday’s Liveline on RTE Radio 1 saw Joe Duffy take calls from some disgruntled viewers, with comments about the scenes ranging from “giving the wrong message to young people” and is “normalising promiscuity for school-goers”.

Others praised the adaptation of Sally Rooney’s eponymous novel for its handling of consent and contraception but that didn’t stop a couple of callers comparing what they’ve seen to a pornography film.

Paul Mescal, who plays Connell has already spoken about how he and his co-star felt “safe and supported” during filming and if you missed Liveline yesterday, you can listen to a recap courtesy of RTE below…
