Hollywood will descend on Roscommon in November to begin filming new horror movie

Folks in Roscommon may notice a few familiar faces next month…

For the longest time, it felt like horror was something that Irish movie makers just couldn’t get quite right.

We can do comedy and drama as well as the best of them, but horror just seemed to be the genre that we couldn’t nail down.

Then along came The Hole In The Ground, and it proved that we could horror successfully, and make it properly scarily. (If you’ve never seen it, it is available on Netflix right now, and you should watch it immediately.)

Which is why it is exciting to hear about The Cellar, a new horror due to begin filming in Roscommon, which will be bringing many of the same crew from The Hole in the Ground over, as well as attracting some major international talent.

The story revolves around Keira Woods, whose daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house in the country. Keira soon discovers there is an ancient and powerful entity controlling their home that she will have to face or risk losing her family’s souls forever.

Keira will be played by Elisa Cuthbert, best known for her roles in the likes of The Girl Next Door, Happy Endings, 24, Love Actually and Old School. She’ll be joined by Irish actor Eoin Macken, known for his work in the likes of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, The Night Shift, Nightflyers, and The Forest.

Filming is set to begin in Roscommon in November, with executive producer Patrick Ewald saying the following about the movie: “Some nightmares are meant to be shared with the world. The Cellar is perhaps the darkest one.”

Patrick O’Neill, MD of Wildcard Distribution and another executive producer on the movie, stated that “Irish audiences have an insatiable appetite for horror films and The Cellar will not disappoint.”

If it as scary as The Hole In The Ground, then we’ll be on to another winner.
