Ireland’s Next Famous Eurovision Hopeful “Could Be Even Worse Than Dustin the Turkey”

Darragh Berry

Long gone are the days of Johnny Logan. Instead, it seems like another Johnny could be representing Ireland in the next Eurovision song contest.

Former Sex Pistol front man, John Lydon or – ‘Johnny Rotten’ as you might better know him as – could be filling a spot on RTE’s Eurosong competition.

The Irish Sun revealed that songwriter Niall Mooney has entered a song — described as a cross between country and punk — into the annual contest.

If RTÉ accept the idea of the song, Lydon will rework Mooney’s tune with his band Public Image Limited.

Lydon told the Irish Sun: “It would be a great honour for me to represent Ireland for the Eurovision Song contest”

RTÉ asked songwriters who had composed potential material for the show to find singers who are used to playing to big crowds and Mooney’s catchy punk track called Pleased To Meet You will be fronted by Lydon if he gets his way.

However, the move still has to be passed by RTÉ who are not keen on the idea.

An insider said that: “This could be even worse for Ireland than Dustin the Turkey with John Lydon screaming into a microphone at Eurovision in Portugal next year.”

It is believed that sending Dustin to represent the country in 2008 was a big mistake that backfired on us hugely and did incalculable damage to our reputation in Europe and in the song contest.

RTÉ is due to reveal Ireland’s 2018 entry after Christmas.

What do you think? Would you like to see a punk song sung by Johnny Rotten or would you much rather if this man below was in the driving seat?
