All right, all right, all riiiight
Today Matthew McConaughey turns 52 years old, and we thought we’d celebrate with some of his greatest hits.
Interstellar (2014)
Where: Netflix
This Christopher Nolan film is pretty complicated, so you may want to pay attention. McConaughey plays Joseph Cooper, a widowed NASA pilot living in 2067 with his father in law and two children. He is tasked with finding a new place for humanity to reside as earth becomes increasingly inhospitable. Matthew McConaughey is at his best in this dramatic and emotionally driven story.
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
Where: YouTube
McConaughey took home an Oscar for his part in Dallas Buyers Club. Based on a true story, Ron Woodroof (McConaughey) is diagnosed with AIDS and begins working the system to provide other AIDS patients with the medication that they need. This film has incredible performances not only from the birthday boy, but from Jared Leto (House of Gucci, Suicide Squad) and Jennifer Garner (13 Going on 30) as well.
How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days (2003)
On to something a little more light hearted. They don’t make romcoms like this anymore. Andie (Kate Hudson) is a writer who agrees to write a column on how to lose a guy in 10 days. She chooses Benjamin (McConaughey) as her victim, not realising he has made a bet that he can get her to fall in love with him. The pair attempt to get what they want without breaking, leading to some hilarious and emotionally poignant moments. A must watch.
Where: Netflix
Magic Mike (2012)
Where: Netflix
Do I really need to spell out why this is on the list? Adam (Alex Pettyfer) is taken under the wing of Magic Mike (Channing Tatum), a male stripper in Vegas who makes easy money. McConaughey plays Dallas, a former stripper who now owns the club that Mike strips in. Is this the best movie that’s ever been released? Maybe not, but if you manage your expectations, it can be a fun one for a Friday evening.
Mud (2012)
Where: Google Play
McConaughey plays the titular character of this 2012 film. Mud is a fugitive, on the run from vigilantes who are out to get him. When two young boys come across him (Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland), they decide to help him on his journey. Mud has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a good indication.
Honourable Mentions:
He is literally only in it for about five minutes, but his small part in The Wolf of Wallstreet (2013) is pretty iconic. Also Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) may not be for everyone, but it holds a special place in our hearts. And who can forget his cameo in Sex And The City? We sure can’t.
