15 Irish Songs That Will Always Remind Everyone Of Summer

James Fenton

We’re some nation for one nation when it comes to absolute summer bangers.

Whether it’s a festival classic, a GAA anthem or a simply a song about ‘July’, there’s plenty of tunes by Irish artists which will always put a spring in our step while we’re sipping cans at the barbecue.

Get the flip flops on and turn the volume up to full blast for the 15 Irish songs that will always remind you of summer.

1. Mundy – July

“The smell of your fresh cut grass,” nothing speaks to us about summer like this one.

2. The Chalets – No Style

An absolute toe-tapper from the Dublin five-piece.

3. Ash – Oh Yeah

If you’re not instantly transported back to the summer of 1996, seek help.

4. Aslan – This Is

Or the whole ‘Made In Dublin’ album for that matter.

“See that bloke in the white t-shirt, right?”…

5. Thin Lizzy -The Boys Are Back In Town

That intro…

6. The Wild Swans – Dancing At The Crossroads

For one glorious summer in 1996, Wexford hurling fans were on top of the world.

7. Picturehouse – Sunburst

If you haven’t sung along to this at a free festival in the Phoenix Park at some point then who even are you?

8. The Corrs – Breathless

We’re heading towards Poptown here and we refuse to apologise.

9. B*Witched – C’est La Vie

We’ve arrived at Poptown.

10. The Thrills – Big Sur

Everyone’s got a dusty copy of their ‘So Much For The City’ album somewhere in their gaff.

11. The Frames – Revelate

This instantly reminds us of a muddy Saturday evening at Oxegen 2005.

12. Mark McCabe – Maniac 2000

We were tempted to leave this one out but given how much it’s played at summer weddings these days we physically couldn’t.

13. Steve Earle and Sharon Shannon – Galway Girl

Remind anyone of a certain ad for cider?

14. 1990 Republic Of Ireland Football Squad – Put ‘Em Under Pressure

Arguably the greatest summer in the history of the world (for Irish people).

15. U2 – City Of Blinding Lights

It was this or ‘Beautiful Day’ but from personal experience, ‘City Of Blinding Lights’ on a summer’s day at Croker is a pretty impressive.

Take note, anyone going on July 22!
