Only One Irish Tune Has Made It Into Rolling Stone’s ‘Top 100 Songs Of The 21st Century’

Whether you want to believe it or not, it’s now been 18 and a half years since we welcomed the year 2000. In Ireland, we ignored the imminent threat of the Millennium Bug by bopping our heads to Westlife’s I Have A Dream which was top of the charts here as we rang in the new century.

As always, music has kept evolving as the years have gone on and now seems as good time as good a time as any for Rolling Stone magazine to release its The 100 Greatest Songs Of The Century – So Far list.

While the aforementioned Irish quintet/quartet are fairly noticeable by their absence in rundown, there is room for everyone’s favourite rockers/political activists U2. The lads’ 2000 hit Beautiful Day is listed as the 40th best song of the century to this point, just ahead of Hurt by Johnny Cash and No One Knows by Queens Of The Stone Age.

Sadly, U2 are the only Irish entry in the list meaning the likes of Maniac 2000 and Samantha Mumba’s whole back catalogue have been ignored. Madness, says you.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Beyoncé’s Crazy In Love came out on top followed by M.I.A’s Paper Planes which is an absolute banger to be fair.
