This Donegal Singer Will Be Your New Music Obsession

Sarah

You may not be aware of the latest sensation to emerge in Ireland’s music scene, because although folk singer-songwriter Rosie Carney has been performing steadily since she was an early-teen, it’s only in very recent times, that her name has been continuously mentioned by music-buffs.

Rosie’s raw talent and poetic melodies have seen her compared to Joni Mitchell and Adele – high praise, indeed. But, she lives up to it. Her voice is tender yet strong, and her lyrics, which are intimate and sharp, will make you stop dead in your tracks.

Born in Hampshire, UK, 20-year-old Rosie moved to Downings, Co. Donegal as a child. Taking inspiration from the rugged landscape of Donegal, as well as her own thoughts and emotions, Rosie says that expressing yourself through art is so important, adding that:

“I find something quite wonderful about being vulnerable. I think it’s such an important aspect of human nature, to allow our hearts to feel and break to their full capacity.”

After performing at Other Voices festival in Dingle and recording music in LA, Rosie was dropped suddenly from her label in 2015.

Following a further battle with depression Rosie finally got the help she needed, and her career began to take off again: She played SXSW festival in Texas last year, and returned to the stage at Other Voices. Her mesmerising songs were listened to by more than 100,000 people monthly in 2016 on Spotify.

People were starting to take notice of the effortless beauty of her music, with Carney really garnering attention when she released her latest single, ‘Awake Me’ from her upcoming LP in late January of this year.

Powerful and poignant, the song explores Rosie’s tumultuous experiences through her beautiful voice and refreshingly raw lyrics. The accompanying video, which perfectly captures the emotions of the track, is an exquisitely shot work of art by Charlie Joe Doherty, featuring Rosie’s cousin Isabelle.

“I’ve been a fool for more than half of my life / I’ve tried to hide”.

Now that she looks set to continue pursuing the bright career she’s clearly destined for, there’s no more hiding for Rosie Carney, and we for one cannot wait to hear more.
