There has been much discussion as to what happens to Connell and Marianne in the future, especially given the fact that the book/series ends so ambiguously. Normal People fans have of course come up with their own predictions, forecasting what they would like to see happen – realistic or not. And while a definitive answer can only come from Sally Rooney herself, both Paul Mescal and co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones have now weighed in on the matter too.
Speaking to Deadline, Paul admitted that he thinks Connell will end up marrying someone else first.
“Connell, I believe, would potentially get married to somebody else. It’ll destroy lots of people’s lives along the way, because ultimately they’re going to be drawn. But they will consciously resist the idea that they’re supposed to be together.”
I think he’s just broken quite a few hearts with that statement, but all hope is not lost just yet as Paul later added: “It’ll be a long process of discovery until they finally find each other permanently, I think.”
Daisy foresees a very different future for the two, saying:
“A little bit of me imagines that they’ll always be in each other’s lives. I just don’t know if it would be in the romantic sense, but at the same time, I find that quite hard to believe, because they do have this uniquely special connection. And so, I hope that they do end up getting married and have loads of kids.”
Only time (and Sally Rooney) will tell.
