Scarlett Johansson turns 37 today, and she has built up quite the list of movies throughout her career.
From the first female member of The Avengers films, to the lovable mother of a young German boy, Scarlett Johansson has range. Her movies include comedies, action films, romcoms, thrillers, so no matter what you enjoy watching, chances are she’s starred in that genre.
Black Widow (2021)
Where: Disney Plus
Okay, so there’s a whole lot of movies that precede this one that tell us more about Black Widow and her motives. However, Black Widow can largely be appreciated as a solo movie too, so even if you’ve never seen an MCU movie, you may just love this. Natasha (Johansson), aka Black Widow, is on the run and reunites with her sister Yelena (Florence Pugh) to take down the organisation that made them widows to begin with.
Marriage Story (2019)
Where: Netflix
Johansson stars alongside Adam Driver (House of Gucci) in this grueling movie about marriage and divorce. A couple are tested as their marriage and family begins to fall apart. This movie has an impressive 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and won a host of awards at the Oscars, Golden Globes, and more.
Jojo Rabbit (2020)
Where: Google Play
This movie is the definition of a tragicomedy. Within seconds you’ll both be laughing and crying. Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) is a dedicated member of the Hitler youth, until he discovers a Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) hidden in his home by his mother (Johansson). Suddenly everything Jojo knows is thrown out the window, and his imaginary friend Hitler (Taika Waititi) is none too happy about it. This film won an Academy Award for best screenwriting, and it shows Johansson at her best.
Lost in Translation (2003)
Where: Amazon Prime
This movie is slow, but stunning. American actor Bob (Bill Murray) moves to Tokyo, where he ends up meeting Charlotte (Johansson). The two find themselves in a similar lonely sitatuon and develop something of a friendship. Charlotte has just been left by her husband, and feels more than a little lost. Like Marriage Story, Lost In Translation received a ton of awards and is a cult favourite.
Her (2013)
Where: Google Play
Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Johansson star in this strange tale, where Johansson plays Samantha, an Artificial Intelligence device used to help with day to day tasks and queries. However, she adapts to the point where Theodore (Phoenix) begins to fall in love with her. For a sci-fi film, this movie has a lot of heart, and the romance between Theodore and Samantha is as believable as it is heartbreaking. For someone who never appears on screen, Johansson does a wonderful job.
The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)
Where: Hulu
Johansson plays Mary Boleyn, the other Boleyn sister in this largely fictional historical drama. King Henry VIII (Eric Bana) begins an affair with Mary, only for her sister Anne (Natalie Portman) to step in as the king’s mistress instead. What ensues is the story we all know, but from the perspective of the other sister, the one often forgotten about by history.
Honourable Mentions:
Some other movies to consider watching are Johansson’s other MCU films, Don Jon, He’s Just Not That Into You, and The Prestige. There’s no shortage of brilliant Johansson movies to choose from. What’s your favourite Johansson film?
