Paul Mescal stars in new psychological drama with Olivia Colman

Katy Thornton

Let’s be honest, we’d watch anything starring Connell Waldron… I mean Paul Mescal.

Paul Mescal of Normal People stars alongside huge names such as Olivia Colman (The Crown), Dakota Johnson (50 Shades of Grey), and Peter Saarsgard (The Guilty) in new drama The Lost Daughter. The film is based on a book by Italian novelist Elena Ferrante. The story follows college professor Leda (Colman) as she arrives at a holiday resort where Will (Mescal) works. She finds herself obsessed with a woman (Johnson) who she sees every day at the resort with her young daughter. This prompts Leda to remember her own experiences with motherhood.

Mescal appears to have a relatively small role in the film, but we’re excited all the same. He is not the only Irish actor to star, with Jesse Buckley of Wild Rose playing a younger version of Colman’s character in flashbacks. The Lost Daughter has received rave reviews, and the cast even won the Best Ensemble Award at the 2021 Mill Valley Film Festival. If the trailer is anything to go by, the film looks to be full of tension. We cannot wait to see it for ourselves.

The film comes out on New Year’s Eve 2021.
