PICS: Dermot Kennedy and Robbie Keane are having ball raising money for charity

James Fenton

Dermot Kennedy’s music career should ensure he gets a steady income over the next few decades but if that goes belly-up, he can always fall back on the football.

Soccer Aid takes place later today and Irish singer Dermot Kennedy is just one of the many celebs who will be togging out alongside some of the biggest names in football to raise money for UNICEF.

The annual fundraiser pits an England selection against a Soccer Aid World XI and Dermot will be lining out for the latter beside Irish legends Robbie Keane and Shay Given. All week, Dermot has been giving Instagram followers a glimpse at the training involved and it would seem the World XI are taking the event quite seriously.

Keane has also been throwing some pictures up including the below one which shows Dermot Kennedy keeping a watchful eye on the kind of shooting technique it requires to become Ireland’s record goalscorer…

Kennedy is said to be an avid football fan and it must be quite the experience for an Irishman to strut their stuff on the pitch alongside Robbie Keane. Other celebs lining out for the World XI include Love Island narrator Iain Stirling, Chelcee Grimes and Roman Kemp. The team will be managed by the King of the Jungle himself Harry Redknapp.

Meanwhile, the England side is coached by Wayne Rooney, Sam Allardyce and Bradley Walsh and will feature the likes of Olly Murs, Michael Owen, Danny Jones, Wes Brown and Emile Heskey.

Some tough opposition for Dermot and Robbie to overcome but the whole of Ireland (and the rest of the world) will be right behind them. Soccer Aid kicks off this evening at 6.30pm and you can watch it all unfold on ITV.
