The President of Ireland has issued a special video message for the country’s sixth class students.
Schools across Ireland have been closed since early March and with many students now coming into the final weeks of their primary school education, President Michael D has recorded a special video message to the class of 2020 ahead of their (virtual) graduation later this month.
In the video, President Higgins can be heard sending his “very best wishes” to all schoolchildren as they enter the final weeks of their primary school years. Acknowledging that the past two months have been difficult for students, teachers and parents alike, Michael D also extended his sincerest sympathies to all those who may have lost loved ones during this time.
“To those of you who may have lost loved ones, may I offer my deepest sympathies. Many of you I know too are worried about relatives who maybe are ill or lonely. I know from so many who have written to me that you are of course missing grandparents, cousins or neighbours that you haven’t seen for some time.”
Adding that he knows many students are also missing their school friends and teachers, he went on to say that he has been very impressed with the way young people have responded to the current situation – continuing their education at hope, and keeping spirits high in spite of cancelled events and graduations.
“As President of Ireland, I have been very impressed with the way in which all of you have responded – risen to the challenges, continued to learn at home, working with your teachers and parents.
You have found all sorts of imaginative ways to remain in touch with your friends and pursue your hobbies, while at the same time always pushing the safety of others including your relatives and neighbours ahead of your own wishes and plans. Those are achievements of which you can all be very proud indeed.”
He finished up by wishing all students “every happiness” as they continue on their educational journeys. You can watch the full video below.
