Saoirse Ronan leads the way for Irish Golden Globes nominations

James Fenton

The nominations for the 2020 Golden Globes are here and Saoirse Ronan has been recognised for her role in upcoming period drama Little Women.

The Carlow star has been nominated in the category of Best Actress In A Motion Picture – Drama alongside Renée Zellweger (Judy), Charlize Theron (Bombshell), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) and Cynthia Erivo (Harriet). This is Ronan’s fourth Golden Globe nomination and comes two years after she took home the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy prize for her role in Lady Bird.

Little Women is due to be released in Ireland on St. Stephen’s Day and is directed by Greta Gerwig, who previously worked with Saoirse on Lady Bird. It is the eighth film adaptation of the iconic Louisa May Alcott novel and sees Ronan play the role of Josephine “Jo” March. Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen will play Jo’s sisters Meg, Amy and Beth respectively.

Saoirse Ronan isn’t the only Irish representative in this year’s Golden Globe nominations with Dubliner Andrew Scott also given a nod in the Best Supporting Actor – Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture category for his role as the ‘hot priest’ in BBC comedy Fleabag.

The 77th Golden Globe ceremony will take place in Beverly Hills on January 5 2020 and will be hosted by Ricky Gervais. The full list of nominations can be found here.
