When Vincent Kompany smashed home a winner for Manchester City against Leicester on Monday night, most Liverpool supporters would have resigned themselves to another trophyless season.
The 1-0 win for the Citizens meant that they just need to beat Brighton on Sunday to secure the Premier League title and even the most positive of Reds would expect nothing else. This, coupled with the fact that Liverpool trailed 3-0 after the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona meant that the Anfield trophy cabinet looked destined to gather cobwebs for another year.
Fast forward 24 hours and Jurgen Klopp’s team are just one step away from being crowned kings of Europe for the sixth time after a barely believable turnaround against Barca last night. Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum each scored two goals to clinch a 4-3 aggregate win but the goalscorers aren’t the only ones making the headlines.
Overall, the team put in an immense performance and the clean sheet they kept against superstars like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez was arguably the most unexpected aspect of the victory.
Afterwards, manager Jurgen Klopp joined his battle-weary players on the pitch for a spine-tingling rendition of club anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone in front of an exasperated Kop. On Virgin Media, the commentary team remained silent and allowed the powerful pictures to breathe as the proud Anfield faithful were heard around the world.
After defying the odds once more, not many would bet against this scene being repeated after the final in Madrid on June 1.
The full video can be viewed below and while we should advise Liverpool fans to stick their earphones in if they’re in the office, we doubt many will care.
