Staying in? Here are six terrifying movies on TV this Halloween night

James Fenton

Tonight is Halloween and if you’re all partied out, the sofa is always a reliable alternative to hitting the town. While October 31 isn’t an official holiday, TV companies are usually generous with their schedules for the night that’s in it and this year is no different.

Stock up on popcorn, draw the curtains and tell those little monsters to stop knocking on your door…

The Babadook – Syfy 9pm

A widow and her son are plagued by a sinister presence lurking in their home.

Scream – Dave 10pm

The slasher flick that spawned million other slasher flicks. Always worth a rewatch.

Drag Me To Hell – Film4 10.45pm

A young woman is cursed to eternal damnation after getting on the wrong side of an elderly lady. A lesson for us all.

Halloween III: Season Of The Witch – Horror Channel 10.55pm

The third instalment of the iconic horror series.

The Descent – Horror Channel 12.50am

An adventure turns into a nightmare for a group of women in this acclaimed 2005 flick.

And the scariest of them all…

Bruce Almighty – Comedy Central 9pm

Extreme caution advised. A beleaguered TV reporter is contacted by God and given almighty powers which he ends up using for selfish gain. Best watched from behind the sofa.
