The Crown casts Game of Thrones star as Prince Philip for final seasons

James Fenton

The Crown has found its Prince Philip for the final two seasons and the actor playing the elder royal will be recognisable to fans of Game of Thrones.

Jonathan Pryce, who played High Sparrow on the hit fantasy drama, will play Prince Philip in the final two seasons of The Crown, it has been confirmed. The series based on the British royal family already boasts a stellar cast but due to the lengthy timeline it covers, the main actors are changed every two seasons.

Currently, Prince Philip is played by Tobias Menzies who replaced Matt Smith at the beginning of season three but once season five rolls around, it will be Jonathan Pryce playing the consort as he enters his autumnal years. He will star opposite Imelda Staunton who will take over from Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth for seasons five and six which will cover the period up to and including the early 21st century.

Pryce earned his first Academy Award nomination last year for his portrayal of Pope Francis in The Two Popes. He has also appeared in big-budget movies such as Evita, Tomorrow Never Dies and Pirates of the Caribbean.
