Birr, Offaly is set to be the home of something incredibly exciting in the coming weeks. The county town is set to be home to one of the most ambitious ecological projects on the whole planet, with plans to open the second-largest giant redwood forest in the world.
Yes, in THE WORLD.
The incredibly ambitious and exhilarating move is happening over the course of Spring 2017 in the gardens of Birr Castle in Offaly. A project called Giants Grove is about to get underway that will aim to create the second-largest giant redwood forest in the world, just outside of California.
The explanation for embarking on such an endeavour, is to represent the millions of Irish diaspora who have fled, left and emigrated the country over years.
The organisers have said the giant trees will be “to signify the giant place that these sons and daughters have in our hearts”.
The plan for the project will be that people can sponsor to plant one of the 2,000 redwood trees – for €500 – which will then be tagged with a GPS device to allow the sponsor to return to said tree that will turn into a total giant.
The project is currently underway, along with the planting of some more familiar trees like arbutus and holly.
