These are the six best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Featuring classics by The Coen Brothers, Alfred Hitchcock, and one of the most expensive movies ever made.

Thursday evening is spoiling us with some genuinely great movies to choose from.

The hard part is deciding which one you want to watch.

North By Northwest – BBC Four – 8pm

One of Alfred Hitchcock’s best movies (which is saying something), it involves Cary Grant as a salesman who is accidentally mistaken for an international spy, and soon finds himself being chased across the country by enemy spies and the police. If you’ve never seen it, we really can’t recommend this enough.

Dumb & Dumber – Comedy Central – 9pm

A classic 90s comedy featuring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as two best friends, both of them with… eh… how do we put this nicely?… below average IQs. When they discover a lost briefcase, they make it their goal to reunite it with their owner, unaware that a lot of dangerous people are also looking for that briefcase.

Stargate – FilmFour – 9pm

Kurt Russell and James Spader travel through space and time using the titular travel device in order to meet a race of aliens which may have influenced the course and future of all mankind. An OTT sci-fi adventure, which is fun but not to be taken seriously at all.

Waterworld – ITV4 – 10.05pm

One of the most expensive movies ever made (at the time, at least), and considered to be a massive flop (which is actually untrue), it stars Kevin Costner in a kind of Mad Max-at-sea action movie, set in the post-apocalypse when all of the icecaps have melted and the entire planet is underwater.

Ali G Indahouse – Comedy Central – 11.10pm

With all of the talk of Sasha Baron Cohen returning to our screens very, very soon as Borat, why not check out his first movie outing tonight.

True Grit – FilmFour – 11.20pm

The Coen Brothers remake the classic western with the help of Jeff Bridges, reuniting for another classic after The Big Lebowski. This time, Bridges plays a grouchy cowboy who has been hired by a young girl (Hailee Steinfeld) to get revenge for the murder of her family.
