These are the ten best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Yes, ten! Including the world TV premiere of one of the biggest Irish movies ever made.

It is Friday, and we are spoiled for choice tonight.

SPOILED!

Black ’47 – Virgin Media One – 9pm

The big Irish film we’re talking about above, getting its world TV premiere tonight. A soldier returns home to Ireland in 1847 hoping to be reunited with his family, only to discover that they’ve all been killed during the Great Famine, and he decides to get revenge on those who didn’t help. Hugo Weaving, Barry Keoghan, Stephen Rea, Moe Dunford, Sarah Greene, and Jim Broadbent star.

2012 – Comedy Central – 9pm

Quite why this huge blockbuster about the end of the world from the director of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow is on Comedy Central, we’re not sure. But we won’t question it.

Layer Cake – FilmFour – 9pm

This mobster thriller is basically the movie that got Daniel Craig the James Bond gig. It is very stylish and very entertaining, and it co-stars Tom Hardy, Sienna Miller, Colm Meaney, Sally Hawkins and Michael Gambon.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part Two – MTV – 9pm

The last one.

Casino – Dave – 9pm

Scorsese and De Niro and Pesci reunite after Goodfellas for this tale of a mobster asked to run some casinos in Vegas, and how his best friend and girlfriend end up complicating his plans. Arguably better than Goodfellas? Discuss.

The Finest Hours – RTE2 – 9.30pm

Based on the true story of an oil-tanker that is ripped in two during a huge Atlantic storm, it revolves around the survivors trying to stay alive, and the coast guard trying to get to them as soon as possible. Stars Chris Pine, Casey Affleck and Eric Bana.

Carrie – FilmFour – 11.10pm

Classic horror movie in which a young girl (Sissy Spacek) with supernatural powers is abused by her highly religious mother and bullying classmates, and it isn’t long before she snaps and decides to get violent revenge.

Wall Street – RTE One – 11.25pm

Charlie Sheen is the young stock broker that is taken under the wing of multi-millionaire boss Michael Douglas. Seduced by his lifestyle of riches, Sheen soon discovers the real, entirely illegal ways Douglas has made his wealth.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One – Channel 4 – 12.10am

The set-up for the big war to come, this third entry in the Hunger Games quadrilogy is all about how governments try to win battles with social media and fake news. So… y’know… pretty topical right now.

Stoker – FilmFour – 1.20am

For all you night owls, Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode star in this twisted thriller dealing with a family mourning the death of their father, only for his brother to enter their lives and try to take his place.
