This Dark Comedy Is The Film You Need To See In The Cinema This Weekend

James Fenton

It’s fair to say that John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix are two of the busiest men in the film industry at the moment.

Earlier this week, Phoenix got tongues wagging as the first trailer for the upcoming Joker movie was unveiled, in which he plays the iconic criminal mastermind. Reilly, meanwhile, has hardly been off the screen in recent months, appearing in the likes of Stan & Ollie, Ralph Breaks The Internet and Holmes & Watson to (mostly) critical acclaim.

Despite the hectic schedules, the pair come have come together to share the lead in The Sisters Brothers, an old-fashioned western which deals with the themes of greed, sibling love, and redemption.

In it, Reilly and Phoenix play the eponymous siblings, Eli and Charlie, who are tasked with killing a man who has allegedly stolen from their boss. What follows is a classic game of cat and mouse as the pair make their way to Jacksonville to carry out the deed.

The Sisters Brothers has all the hallmarks of a road movie, except with horses instead of vehicles and there are plenty of gags thrown in along the way as Eli attempts to keep his wildcard of a younger brother in check.

Reilly has made quite a name for himself as being a key component in a double act and neither he nor Phoenix let us down as their rapport is evident. The pair are joined in the cast by Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed who both do themselves justice alongside the leads.

The Sisters Brothers currently holds an approval rating of 85% and the trailer can be viewed below.
