An Unmissable Movie About A Global Sporting Icon Is On Irish TV Tonight

James Fenton

Anyone who has seen Amy, the heart-wrenching behind the scenes look at the life and demise of singer Amy Winehouse, will know just how good Asif Kapadia is at portraying the lives of people in the public idea.

The British filmmaker, who directed the aforementioned biopic as well as Senna, takes up production duties for this remarkable film about Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

This time Anthony Wonke directs the suitably-titled Ronaldo, which was released in 2015 and gives viewers a front row seat to observe the hard work and dedication it takes to be one of the greatest players the world has ever seen.

Ronaldo’s relentless drive to reach the top has culminated in the winning of five world player of the year awards and countless trophies for Manchester United and Real Madrid as well as his nation of Portugal who he led to Euro 2016 glory last year.

Of course, a few of his more recent achievements aren’t in the movie but it’s fascinating to watch how an ambitious young boy in Madeira chased an unlikely dream while having to deal with issues such as the alcoholism of his father, who died in 2005 when Ronaldo was just 20 years old.

An obvious family man who cares deeply for his loved ones, we see how Ronaldo’s mother can’t bear to watch her son in the biggest games and how much he provides for and cares for all those around him including his young son.

Ronaldo airs tonight on 3e at 9pm and you can catch a sneak peek by clicking on the above trailer.
