Ant And Dec Anger Viewers With Northern Ireland Comment But They Were Actually Correct

James Fenton

TV presenters Ant & Dec drew controversy on Saturday night when a comment about the status of Northern Ireland got social media in a state of flurry.

Referring to a Saturday Night Takeaway segment called Sofa Watch, Dec said that ‘Northern Ireland isn’t actually part of Great Britain but we still want it to be part of Sofa Watch“.

The comment didn’t go down well in some parts with some viewers expressing their outrage on Twitter.

The ire was misplaced however as Northern Ireland isn’t part of Great Britain so Dec’s comment was correct. Those in the know pointed out that the island containing England, Scotland and Wales is called Great Britain while Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain And Northern Ireland, otherwise known as the UK.

While the cheeky chappies should have enough experience to know that every word they utter on TV will be closely scrutinised, those taking offence will have to hold their hands up on this one. Better luck next time.
