One Of The Most Talked-About TV Shows Of The Year Starts On RTÉ Tonight

James Fenton

Fasten your seat belts, couch potatoes. You’re in for a bumpy ride.

Hump Night arrives early this week on the back of the Bank Holiday and if you’re looking for a decent programme to flake out in front of then I’ve got just what you need.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace is the second edition of the American Crime Story series which gave us The People Vs. O.J. Simpson in 2016 and from what this writer has seen so far, it’s just as, if not more, intense. Okay, I only caught the first two episodes when it started on BBC a few months back (life got in the way and all that) but I’ve the rest of it recorded and ready to go.

If, unlike myself, you’ve yet to catch any of it, you’re in for a treat when the first two episodes of the nine-part series air tonight on RTÉ 2. The show begins with the final tragic moments of acclaimed Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace who was (spoiler alert) gunned down outside his Miami home in 1997.

The series then revolves around the main suspect in the case as well as Versace’s family (including his sister Donatella played by Penélope Cruz) who are left to pick up the pieces.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace also stars Édgar Ramírez in the title role as well as 90s heartthrob Ricky Martin as the designer’s grieving lover. The often disturbing portrayal of the main suspect by Darren Criss is the performance that really catches the eye though as his whole psychotic plot unfolds.

Tune into the first episode tonight at 9pm on RTÉ 2 followed by the second episode at 10pm. And you know what the best thing is? You’ll be caught up with yours truly by 11pm. Then we can watch the rest of the series together! No? Okay.

Don’t fret if you do miss it though as it’s quite likely the show will end up on Netflix just like its predecessor.
