Netflix 2019 – All You Need To Know

Zoe

2018 was a good year for Netflix but the streaming site is set to see some huge releases in 2019, as well as the return of some of our favourite shows.

Netflix 2019 is shaping up to be a cracker of a line-up with shows such as The Crown season 3, Mindhunter Season 2 and Stranger Things season 3 spoiling us. It’s pretty obvious the main shows took a year off to produce some of their finer work, leaving us fans waiting patiently.

The wait is almost over and very soon we’ll be binging our way through 2019 like it’s no one’s business. Here’s a list of what’s to come.

A Series of Unfortunate Events season 3 – January 1

From day one, literally, Netflix will kick off the new year in style with the final instalment of the Lemony Snicket series.

A Series of Unfortunate Events follows the three Baudelaire children, genius orphans who will inherit a huge fortune when the eldest Violet turns 18. However, Count Olaf – played by the amazing Neil Patrick Harris – is continuing to do everything in his power to get his hands on this fortune.

Season 3 will cover the final books of the Lemony Snicket series: The Slippery Slope, The Grim Grotto, The Penultimate Peril, and The End.

Sex Education – January 11

This coming-of-age series about teen sexuality stars Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield. Anderson plays a sex therapist named Jean, who has a complicated romantic life and an intense, occasionally strained relationship with her teenage son.

A socially awkward high-school virgin, Otis – played by Butterfield – knows a fair amount about sex, given his mother is a sex therapist. He teams up with a friend to set up and underground sex education clinic for their school mates.

Cue all the weird and wonderful questions.

Nightflyers – date TBC

Pretty much anything with George RR Martin’s name attached to it is gonna be good and his new highly-awaited sci-fi show is no acception.

Set in the year 2093 on the eve of Earth’s destruction, this show follows a team of scientists on the most advanced ship in the galaxy called – spoiler alert – The Nightflyer.

On a mission to contact alien lifeforms who hold the secret to save mankind from imminent extinction, however all doesn’t go to plan. Of course it doesn’t.

Titans – January 11

The highly anticipated DC Comics show has its Netflix debut with Batman’s sidekick Robin leading a team of superheroes.

The series, which has already debuted in its entirety on DC Universe’s streaming service, sees the four heroes reluctantly joining forces to defeat a dark evil.

“They’re all lost, and they find one another to form this surrogate family.” co-executive producer Geoff Johns explains.

Star Trek: Discovery season 2 – January 18

Another space themed show makes its return in the form of Star Trek: Discovery. I strongly advise watching the first season, you have the guts of three weeks to catch up.

Staring Ethan Peck as a young Spock, we’ll see the new crew meet the well known character and lead themselves into a world of new adventures.

Season two will air on a weekly basis, first in the US and then in the UK from Saturday January 19 from 8am.

Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes – January 24

This is something I’ve been waiting for. I’ve a tiny obsession with true crime, and this real-life docu-series is for all you true crime fans out there too.

The four episodes will feature never-before-hears audio with Ted Bundy on death row, bringing the famously twisted mind of the serial killer into the light for the very first time.

The chilling series will invade our psyche with exclusive interviews that come from the “Jack the Ripper of the United States,” himself.

The Umbrella Academy – February 15

The Umbrella Academy is hitting Netflix with a bang as a new set of superheroes try to stop the end of days. On hiatus since 2009, the new season is music to fans ears and Netflix have confirmed that all 10 one-hour episodes will be released in February.

The live action series follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes — The Monocle, Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, Number Five, The Horror, and the seemingly powerless Vanya -as they work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.

Santa Clarita Diet Season 3, TBC

Netflix announced that the full cast will return for 10 half-hour episodes. Leading the way is Drew Barymore, who as ever craves the ungodly taste of human flesh. Nice.

The zombie comedy, starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant, received generally favourable responses to season 2. Her new found taste for flesh leads to an array of comical, but odd, marriage woes but Barrymore and her on-screen hubby are determined to make things work – even if that means committing various murders to sate her new desires. Ahh, true love.

Suits season 8, Part B – TBC

The USA Network has yet to confirm when this show will be back but going on previous mid-season premieres, it could be March or April 2019

This year, chaos erupts as there’s a battle to become a named partner at the firm. Fighting tooth and nail, Samantha Wheeler (Katherine Heigl) and Alex Williams (Dulé Hill) lock horns to see their names on the sign.

However, fans are likely to be left on the edge of their seats with the winner set to be revealed next year. Cliff hangers are our fave. NOT.

On My Block Season 2, TBC

On My Block season two recently got the green light from Netflix, which means it could be back as soon as March but no confirmed date has been announced just yet.

Season one was met with roaring success as viewers found themselves enthralled with the comedy-drama. As ever, the season ended on a cliff-hanger, leaving many of the characters’ futures on the show up in the air.

Prepare yourself for questions to those unanswered questions, the aftermath of the shooting and possibly, even more questions.

Actors in the show, Capri and Tinoco both took to Twitter to promise “more drama”.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 2, April 5

If you’ve not watched this series yet, be warned – it’s nothing like the tv show we watched while growing up.

At the end of season 1, Sabrina sacrificed her freedom to protect the town of Greendale. In turn, she pledged herself to the Dark Lord and the Church of Night – pretty dark stuff.

Now Sabrina must renounce her old life after signing the Book of the Beast, which means no more Baxter High, no more mortal friends and, most pressingly, no more Harvey. Or does it?

Our Planet, TBC

Three words.

ALL OVER THIS.

Sir David Attenborough and his team have joined forces with Netflix to bring a new nature programme as awe-inspiring as Planet Earth. I mean, could it get any better?!

Expect to be blown away of the magnificence of our natural world.

The Alienist Season 2, TBC

The Alienist season two got the go-ahead from US network TNT over the summer with a second gritty crime set to be investigated in Victorian New York.

Think of it like a Victorian True Detective!

The incredible Dakota Fanning plays ambitious police secretary/aspiring detective Sara Howard, who with the rest of the original team, search for a missing child that brings them into contact with a mysterious woman with a murderous past who is connected to a notorious gang.

13 Reasons Why Season 3, TBC

While no exact date has been released, the new season should be available on Netflix around June or July. Fans of the show will see more teen drama and hard-hitting issues tackled in the third outing.

The teaser video that accompanied the season three announcement doesn’t reveal much. Well, it’s doesn’t reveal anything at all. Something clear is that this season will tackle some serious and relevant topics.

Orange Is The New Black Season 7, TBC

Back in Feb 2016, Netflix renewed the prison drama for three more seasons, taking it through to lucky number seven. Although very popular, this is said to be the final series of the hit female prison comedy/drama.

Unlike the ending of season 5, we didn’t have to deal with too many cliff-hangers but that’s not to say some crazy stuff won’t go down. As we know Piper was granted early release but don’t go thinking she won’t make an appearance in season 7. She did marry Alex after all.

Better Call Saul Season 5

The prequel series to Breaking Bad still needs to deliver quite a bit before it can lead us up to Breaking Bad.

Airing on a weekly basis, season five will see tensions rise between the leading anti-hero star and his girlfriend Kim.

We all wait on the edge of our seat for this one, let’s hope it delivers!

Ozark Season 3

In October, leading star Jason Bateman tweeted what we all wanted to know – there would be a season three! A fitting tweet, considering he not only stars in the show, but he’s directed some episodes and also acts as executive producer. Good man Jason.

Marty Byrde and his family fell deeper into a life of crime in season two, with a tense final episode opening up new possibilities for depravity – so anything could happen.

Stranger Things Season 3

Season three of this show was a given even before the second season premiered last October, with Netflix confirming it late last year.

We’ve been waiting a while for this, but bosses of the streaming site say it will 100% be worth the wait.

The latest season could be coming out in the summer but I’m hoping for an October release to tie in with Halloween.

Mindhunter Season 2

SO excited for this – I really am a crazy serial killer/ true crime fan.

The intriguing serial killer drama from the mind of Joe Penhall has wrapped up filming now and will be back in 2019. There’s no release date but it could be coming out before October.

It’s been revealed that the second season will focus on the real-life events of 79-81, two years after season one, where the team will look at the Atlanta child murders – a series of 28 killings of African-American children, teenagers and adults.

Narcos: Mexico Season 2

After the success of season 1, Netflix have confirmed a new season. Following worldwide praise, the popular show explores the origins of the drug war in Mexico and viewers can’t get enough of it.

There is a clever cat-and-mouse drama between Cartel leader Félix Gallardo (played by Diego Luna) and DEA Agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña), and season 2 is sure to be just as good, if not better.

The plot has been kept under wraps ahead of its premiere, but it looks likely to follow the narrative between Camarena and Gallardo. Season one already saw the war against drugs move up a gear and season two could see the consequences turn even darker.

Narcos: Mexico is set at a similar time as sister series Narcos, so there is always the possibility of the stories crossing over.

The Crown Season 3

I was hoping to have the new season ready to binge this Christmas, but due to a casting reshuffle, the filming was pushed back slightly. To make up for it, producers have been filming season three and four back-to-back so we won’t need to wait as long next time – yaaass!

The third and fourth series will span the years 1964-76, with series one and two having covered the early years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, from 1947-63.

Netflix don’t have a trailer for us just yet, but this still of Olivia Coleman is enough. Can’t wait to see her as the Queen.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

The Dark Crystal is getting a remake into a TV series, we’ve yet to get an airdate but it will be coming in 2019.

In this prequel to the fantasy classic, three young Gelfling inspire a rebellion against the cruel Emperor when they discover a horrifying secret.

As you can see, 2019 will be a pretty great year for Netflix. Now we just need to find the time to watch it all…
