It’s been another wacky week in the world of Irish football so it seems appropriate that two of the biggest characters to ever wear the green shirt will be appearing on The Late Late Show tonight.
Ryan Tubridy will be welcoming former Ireland stars Jason McAteer and John Aldridge to his sofa this evening. The Liverpudlian pair will be talking about the upcoming fundraising match between a Liverpool legends team and a Republic Of Ireland legends team which is being put on to raise funds for the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust. Sean, from Dunboyne in Co. Meath, suffered serious injuries when he was attacked outside Anfield ahead of Liverpool’s match with Roma last April. The fundraising match will take place at the Aviva Stadium on Friday April 12.
McAteer and Aldridge have remained firm friends since their playing days and are always good for a bit of craic when they appear on TV. They’re sure to offer their opinions on Mick McCarthy’s successful return as Ireland manager as well as the now infamous ‘tennis ball protest’ which took place during the match with Georgia on Tuesday.
Also appearing will be YouTube star Riyadh Khalaf, and his parents. The family will talk about Riyadh’s experiences of coming out to his Irish-Catholic mother and his Muslim Iraqi father. Riyadh will also speak about how he hopes his new book will help young gay people embrace their differences.
Italian man Guido Nasi was attacked in Dublin in 1999 and is now unable to walk or feed himself. He will be telling Ryan about what happened on the day of the assault and how he’s celebrating a new chapter in his life.
Colette Byrne, Venetia Quick and John Fitzsimons will be talking about dealing with the death of their partners while musical entertainment will be provided by Damien Dempsey and the stars of The King And I.
The Late Late Show gets underway tonight on RTÉ 1 at 9.35pm.
