PIC: English Lad Learns How To Properly Pronounce This Irish Name And His Mind Is Blown

Darragh Berry

It’s no secret that people outside of Ireland find it very hard to pronounce the most Irish names at times.

I understand the problem first-hand. People trying to pronounce the silent ‘gh’ at the end of my name turns ‘Da-ra’ into something like ‘darach’.

And I’m not the only one: Siobhán, Niamh, Aoife, Fiachra and many more will stand with me when it comes to people outside of Ireland butchering your name.

When you teach someone to say it phonetically, however, it makes things so much easier and this English lad’s mind was literally blown when he realised how Aoife was actually pronounced.

“i just found out aoife is pronounced ee-fa and my head’s so far gone i feel like i’ve taken a pill in ibaoife”

Now, if he can just pass this information on to everyone else outside of Ireland, that would be fantastic.

Aoifes everywhere, mispronunciations are going to be a thing of the past.
