WATCH: Disney unveil the trailer for their first original animated movie since Moana

Rory Cashin

We already want the teddy bear version of the giant armadillo.

Working backwards in the animated movies released under the Disney banner, we’ve got Onward (a Pixar movie), Frozen II (a sequel), The Lion King (a remake), Toy Story 4 (a sequel and a Pixar movie), Ralph Breaks The Internet (a sequel), Incredibles 2 (a sequel and a Pixar movie), Coco (a Pixar Movie), and Cars 3 (a sequel and a Pixar movie).

It hasn’t been Moana was released in November 2016 that we’ve got an original Disney animated movie, and from the looks of this trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon, it was worth the wait.

The plot synopsis as follows:

“Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it is up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world – it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well.”

From the director of Big Hero 6, the writer of Crazy Rich Asians, and a voice cast including Kelly Marie Tran (The Last Jedi) and Awkwafina (Ocean’s 8), the vibe of this trailer is definitely in line with recent live-action release Mulan, but the presence of a clever and adorable armadillo is giving us some seriously old-school Disney vibes. And seriously, when can we get our hands on the teddy bear version of that guy!?

Raya and the Last Dragon is currently scheduled to arrive in Irish cinemas on 12 March 2021, and you can check out the brand new trailer right here:
