If anyone ever dismisses the power of an Irish accent, show them this clip of NBA star Anthony Edwards being faced with one at a press conference last night.
Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards was facing the media when he was met by an accent which stopped him in his tracks. The lilt belong to Co. Clare reporter Jim Conlan, who was putting questions to the 19-year-old ahead of the Timberwolves game against the Milwaukee Bucks.
As Conlan ran through his query, Anthony’s ears very obviously pricked up and it became clear that he had been distracted. “Where are you from, Jim?” he asked and when the answer arrived, he added “I like your accent, it’s tough. I wanna learn how to talk like that.”
He went on ask Conlan to repeat the question as he had been listening to his accent too much. Have a look at the humorous exchange below…

Completely stopped in his tracks. We’ve all been there when we’ve been abroad, haven’t we? Of course, there’s a good chance that what Edwards really meant was “I haven’t a clue what you’re saying.”
If so, fair play to him for dressing it up so politely and to Jim for being a good sport.
