He was a 45/1 shot before The Open got underway on Thursday but this evening Shane Lowry has defied all the odds by clinching the Claret Jug.
The Offaly man finished ahead of England’s Tommy Fleetwood and enjoyed the support of the majority of the Portrush crowd throughout the weekend. He returned the favour by sealing his first ever major, sparking joyous scenes on the course and around the whole of Ireland.
Back in Offaly, Esker Hills golf club broke into a rendition of Offaly Rover in celebration of their local hero’s achievement.
