WATCH: Social media laps up tense ‘Mr. Keane’ v Klopp exchange

James Fenton

Anyone watching Monday Night Football may have been surprised to see that the famously fiery Roy Keane appeared a lot more mellow than usual.

Roy Keane was in the MNF studio to offer his thoughts on Sky’s live Premier League game between Liverpool and Arsenal and, unusually, his appearance was pretty much void of any controversy. Looking fairly sunkissed and sporting a freshly-trimmed beard, the Corkman appeared to be enjoying a nice, peaceful evening chewing the Premier League fat with fellow pundit Jamie Carragher and host Dave Jones.

That was until Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp appeared on screen for a pitchside interview after his team’s 3-1 victory over The Gunners. Keane, who incidentally has tipped The Reds to win the league, had just been praising the performance of Klopp’s men with the caveat that they had been a bit sloppy defensively at times. Sure, if anyone saw Arsenal’s goal, there wouldn’t be many better words to describe it as sloppy, right?

Well, it seems Klopp would disagree as he began his interview by calling out the comments of ‘Mr. Keane’, who met the German’s defence with a smile before starting to shuffle in his seat a bit more as the Liverpool manager continued to air his disbelief. Roy, clearly not used to having people hit back at him, didn’t really know where to look and you can view the tense exchange at the beginning of the clip below and a bit more around the 1:25 mark…

Ever the good mate, Jones concluded the interview by informing Klopp that Keano had been praising his side as well but this was met by a gratuitous laugh before Klopp turned and walked away…

Poor Roy. What’s he ever done to anyone? The former Ireland captain did manage to restore a fraction of his fearless reputation by throwing in a bit of self-deprecation once the dust had settled…

“That’s spoiled my night”.

In fairness to the Liverpool boss, he has promised to watch the clip again in case he made a mistake but the tense exchange saw the names of both men trending long into the night. Keane is never one to let go of a grudge though and if he ever brings out a third book, Klopp will no doubt be looking for his name in the index pages. We await Klopp v Keane round two with bated breath.
