Over 30 years since the original movie arrived, and we’re already laughing at the trailer for the sequel.
Released in 1988, Coming To America was one of the many huge hits early in Eddie Murphy’s career that sent him towards superstardom, playing an African prince who decides to travel to America with his loyal servant (Arsenio Hall) to “sow his royal oats”, as it were.
Over three decades later, and after some time in the career doldrums, Murphy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, having reminded everyone who great he can be in recent Netflix movie Dolemite Is My Name.
Reteaming with that movie’s director, Murphy has returned to the iconic role, now as the newly crowned King Akeem, heading back to the States to seek out his apparent son and would-be future ruler of Zamunda.
Murphy and Hall are joined by Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Shari Headley, Teyana Taylor, Wesley Snipes and James Earl Jones.
Originally due for release in cinemas in August this year, but in light of the pandemic, Paramount sold the distribution rights to Amazon for a whopping $125 million, so Coming 2 America now arrives exclusively on Prime Video from 5 March 2021.
