WATCH: The first trailer for the remake of The Witches has arrived

Rory Cashin

Anne Hathaway takes on the lead role, and the movie will arrive just in time for Halloween.

Released 30 years ago this year, the original adaptation of The Witches was one of those movies that seemed to be designed specifically to make sure young children would never sleep again. Angelica Huston was absolutely phenomenal as the Grand High Witch, wanting to actually turn kids into mice, and then kill them.

Yeah, we can understand why this totally scarred our childhood psyches, now that we think about it.

Jump forward to today, and Academy Award-winning director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back To The Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) is taking on the Roald Dahl classic, and bringing along Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway as this version’s take on the Grand High Witch.

Joining them is the Oscar-winning Octavia Spenser, the Oscar-nominated Stanley Tucci, and the Emmy-winning Chris Rock.

Initially due for release this week, the movie was then pushed back to a non-specific release date in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but Warner Brothers have since updated the release again, with the movie set to arrive far sooner than anyone expected.

It’s due to debut on HBO Max in the States on Thursday, October 22 before arriving in cinemas around the world (including, hopefully, Ireland) on Wednesday, October 28. Check out the trailer right here:
