WATCH: The first trailer for the Shane MacGowan documentary has landed

Rory Cashin

Produced by Johnny Depp, the documentary has already picked up some major awards at festivals around the world.

2020 is turning out to be a bit of a bumper year for documentaries about Irish musical legends, between the imminent arrival of the Thin Lizzy doc, and now a look into the life of the lead singer and songwriter for The Pogues.

Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan will combine interviews, previously unseen archive footage and specially commissioned animations with an impressive soundtrack, and will detail Shane’s explosive existence from his early days growing up in Ireland, to time spent on the mean streets of London and embracing the punk scene, to forming The Pogues.

The documentary aims to reveal MacGowan’s passions, humour, and deep knowledge of music, history, spirituality, and popular culture, and is intended as a vision of the world through the eyes of the great punk poet himself and an intimate cast of close friends and family members.

The movie had its world premiere at the San Sebastian International Film Festival last month where it won the Special Jury Prize and received some glowing reviews.

Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan is due to arrive in UK cinemas on Friday, November 20, with an Irish cinematic release planned for when cinemas in Ireland reopen.
