With countless live cultural events cancelled due to Covid over the past few months, artists have been looking for new and inventive ways that would enable them to make a return to gigging. The UK’s first socially distanced concert took place back in August and now bands are exploring other avenues – giant inflatable bubbles.

Legendary band The Flaming Lips achieved a world-first this week, performing an entire concert from the inside of huge blow-up bubbles. An idea thought up by the band themselves, it essentially saw both band members and concert-goers encased in giant inflatable bubbles – meaning that social distancing could be adhered to without having to cap audience numbers.

Trying to work out the logistics of the novel idea for several weeks, it seems to have gone according to plan judging by the video below.

The future of gigging? Possibly, but as one Lovin team member pointed out – the crowd looks suspiciously like a pond of raving tadpoles. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
