WATCH: The Weeknd’s Super Bowl half time performance in full

James Fenton

On a night when Tom Brady won his seventh Super Bowl, The Weeknd took to stage at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa for the showpiece’s traditional half time show.

As with previous Super Bowls, the world’s attention wasn’t just focused on the on-field action, with millions anticipating a performance by The Weeknd during the break in play.

The Canadian musician blasted through a string of his hits, starting with Starboy and taking in the likes of Can’t Feel My Face and I Feel It Coming before finishing off with a barnstorming rendition of his 2020 mega hit Blinding Lights.

A large cast of bandaged-faced dancers helped The Weeknd through his set and as with most Super Bowl performances of recent years, it’s gotten the meme treatment from the internet’s creative and comedic geniuses.

Reviews of the show have been leaning more on the positive side, with Patrick Ryan of USA Today calling the singer (real name Abel Tesfaye) “charismatic,” adding that while it didn’t live up to previous half time performances from the likes of Prince and Beyoncé, it was better than those of the Black Eyed Peas and Maroon 5. On the other hand, Britt Julious of the Chicago Tribune said that it was an “expensive nothing.”
