And it's not quite what we expected... Slight spoilers ahead!
Ever since the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That was announced, there's been speculation on how the show would handle Kim Cattrall's exit. Already a third movie was axed as Cattrall refused to sign on, with the reasons behind this muddy and unclear. Some say it was down to her infamous feud with Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie Bradshaw, others speculate she didn't like where the character of Samantha was taken in the movies.
No matter the reason, it was clear from the beginning that Cattrall, and therefore Samantha, would not appear in the reboot of the show. But given her close onscreen connection to Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda, the writers were in for a tricky one when it came to writing her out of it. Fans of the show would not accept any old explanation, nor did they want to hear that Samantha had died.
Finally, only two weeks ahead of the premiere, we have some insight into Samantha Jones' fate. An insider gave The Daily Mail an exclusive, stating: "We couldn't have Samantha roaming around New York City and not have the other women (Charlotte and Miranda) not interacting with her. It just wouldn't have made sense." In And Just Like That, Carrie and Samantha have fallen out because Carrie fired her as her publicist. Samantha has also moved on to live in London, where she is undoubtedly thriving.
Samantha won't be forgotten about in the new series and we believe that the show is leaving it open should Cattrall ever want to return. According to The Daily Mail, by the end of the season Carrie will extend an olive brand because she misses her friend. While we're sad to hear they've fallen out, given how strong their friendship was, we are glad there's a chance for reconciliation. We just hope Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker can make up too.
